Biology Module 2 - 3.patterns of inheritance 3.1 explain the term gene, allele, dominant, recessive, codominant, homozygous and heterozygous

3.1 explain the term gene, allele, dominant, recessive, codominant, homozygous and heterozygous

gene - a sequence of DNA nucleotide that codes for a polypeptide

allele - one of two or more alternative forms of a gene

dominant - an allele having an effect on the phenotype even when a recessive allele is also                     present

recessive - an allele having an effect on the phenotype only when a dominant allele is not                        present

co dominant - when two allele at a locus have an effect on the phenotype of an                                            heterozygous organism

heterozygous - possessing two different alleles of a gene

homozygous - possessing two identical alleles of then same gene
