Biology Module 3 - 3.sexual reproduction in humans 3.4 compare the structure of ovum and sperm

3.4 compare the structure of ovum and sperm

Sperm cell

structure - head - acrosome and nucleus
               - middle - mitochondria
               - tail - axial filament

Mobility - swims by lashing movement of filament

Nucleus - 23 (haploid) highly condensed DNA

Energy Store - very little most energy provided by fructose from seminal vesicle

Acrosome - present - contains enzymes to digest pathway to oocyte

Mitochondria - arranged spirally around axial filament to provide energy for swimming

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Egg cell

structure - sperical cell surrounded by zona pellucida and follicle cells

Mobility - very limited mobility; moves by action of cilia in oviduct

Nucleus - 23 (haploid)

Energy Store - lipid droplets on cytoplasm

Acrosome - absent

Mitochondria - many mitochondria to provide energy for development of embryo after fertilization
