Biology Module 3 - 3.sexual reproduction in humans 3.1 describe the structure and function of the male and female reproductive system

3.1 describe the structure and function of the male and female reproductive system

                         male reproductive system

diagram of male reproductive system

Structure

testis - produces male gametes inside seminiferous tubules

          -secretes testosterone

epididymis - collects sperm from seminiferous tubules reabsorb fluid to concentrate them

                  - store sperm and is site if maturation of sperm

vas defernes - muscular tube that moves sperm by peristalsis during intercourse

cowper's gland - secretes fluid that lubricate, clean and neutralizes urethra before and during ejaculation

prostate gland - contributes to semen by secreting mucus and chemicals that activate sperm

seminal vesicle - secretes seminal fluid as part of semen

                        - seminal fluid is alkaline to neutralize contents of vagina to protect sperm

urethra - contractile tube that moves semen through the penis

(glans) penis - fills with blood to become erect

                      - sensory receptors at tip for arousal during intercourse

Functions of male reproductive system

  • produce very large numbers of male gametes which are known as spermatozoa
  • produce a liquid medium (semen) for the delivery of sperm into the vagina
  • secrete male hormone testosterone

                         Female reproductive system

Structure

diagram of female reproductive system

ovaries - secretes oestrogen and progesterone

oviduct (fallopian tube) - muscular tube lined with cilia
                                    - site of fertilization
                                    - transport embryo to uterus
uterus - inner lining endometrium - site of development of embryo/fetus
          - outer lining myometrium - contracts during child birth

cervix - neck of uterus - muscle relaxes during child birth
          - plug of antibacterial mucus during pregnancy which               reduces infection

Vagina - birth canal - site of deposition of semen during                        intercourse
            - bacteria produce lactic acid to prevent growth                         of microorganisms

Functions of female reproductive system

  • produce female gametes in ovaries
  • transfer female gametes from ovaries to the site of fertilization in the oviduct
  • provide a site for internal development of the embryo and foetus for nine months (gestation period) between fertilization and birth
  • secrete female hormones oestrogen and progesterone
