Biology Module 2 - 4.aspects of genetic engineering 4.3 discuss the benefits and hazards of gene therapy

4.3 discuss the benefits and hazards of gene therapy

gene therapy is the treatment of a disease by manipulating the genes in the person's cell

Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is a genetic disease in which abnormally think mucus is produced in the lungs and other parts of the body. The person will be prone to bacterial infection because mucus cannot be removed so bacteria can breed in it.

Benefits of using gene therapy to treat (CF)

  • can treats previously untreatable diseases
  • requires no antibiotics
  • treats the cause rather than symptoms

Hazards/Disadvantages of using gene therapy to treat (CF)
  • only targets the lung cells
  • effect only last a few days
  • manipulation of genes so there are moral and ethical issues
